What
the 1918 Independence represents is more than just our nation’s resilience
to, in the face of Genocide, liberate the Armenian people after centuries
of imperial rule.
The Independent Republic of 1918 is also the
reason why there is a Republic of Armenia today for if it were not for the
heroic determination of Armenians 93 years ago, Armenia could have been
swallowed by oppressive forces and could have ceased to exist.
In the past the Knesset debated that a
resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide should be debated by the
parliament’s defense and foreign relations committee. That committee holds
its meetings behind closed doors and concerns have been voiced that under
such circumstances, the committee could propose to not consider the
motion.

Fighting for Azerbaijan in Karabakh War
The
ARF delegation met first with Ghaleb Majadleh, Labor party member. The
discussions centered on the upcoming parliamentary debate for the
recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Knesset, the role and
intentions of Turkey in the region, and Israeli-Armenian relations.
Majadleh, the first Arab minister in an Israerli government, emphasized
his sympathy with the Armenian Cause and agreed that meetings between the
representatives of both parties are important and should be frequent.
“There can
be no reconciliation without Genocide recognition. Those who are trying to
present attempts to establish relations with Turkey as reconciliation are
wrong. Real reconciliation comes after recognition,”

April 24, 2011: A Tale of Two Turkeys
On April 24, 2011, in
Istanbul and Washington,
we saw two very different
Turkeys
In Istanbul, citizens of Turkey, under threat of prosecution and violence,
courageously called for a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian
Genocide.
Eren Keskin, a leader of the Human Rights Association Istanbul Branch,
spoke of the need for recognition, repentance, and reparations for this
crime.
In Washington, DC, allies of Ankara's policy of genocide denial celebrated
in front of the Turkish Embassy during a silent vigil by local Armenians
in memory of the Armenian Genocide.
They were later warmly welcomed into the Embassy.
As
Americans, we need to decide where our government stands:
With the small but growing civil society movement within Turkey that
condemns their government's denial of the Armenian Genocide and calls for
truth and justice for this crime;
or
on the side of Ankara's allies - genocide deniers who rejoice in the
suffering of the Armenians and keep tightening their gag rule on U.S.
recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Following WWI,
the representatives of the newly born Armenian Republic and the Turkish

Despite
Armenian-Americans’ persistent admonishment of Pres. Obama to refrain from
substituting “Meds Yeghern” (Great Calamity) for the Armenian Genocide in
his annual April 24 statement, he has continued to do so for three years
in a row.
