We
witnessed death and destruction in the 1988 Earthquake.
We
saw villages raised and thousands uprooted in Artsakh.
We
bear the scars of the Genocide.
But
in our moments of despair, activists, humanitarians and relief
organizations came to our aid.
In
return, we have also come to the aid of others, fighting to end
the Genocide in Darfur, stop child abduction in Uganda, and raise
money for the victims of Katrina.
As
Armenians, as humanitarians, it’s time again to respond, to help
the victims and survivors of the Haiti disaster. This is our
moment.

socialists say
The
Socialist Party of France has slammed Turkish Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s threat to evict nearly 100 000
undocumented Armenian workers in retaliation for a vote in
Parliament Swedish recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
“If executed, the threat would constitute a serious violation of
human rights and is contrary to humanist values of the European
Union that Turkey's ambition to join,” said Jean-Christophe
Cambadelis, National Secretary for Europe and International
Relations.
“The Socialist Party, originally a law in France, recognized the
Armenian Genocide and strongly condemns the statement of the
Prime Minister of Turkey. If the Democratic Turkey is not
responsible for the crimes committed by the Ottoman Empire, so
recognition of Genocide is a moral requirement,” he said.
ANKARA
(Hurriyet)–Turkey’s leading opposition party on Monday requested
that a session of Parliament be called to determine a strategy
for Ankara to take in combating efforts to gain recognition of
the Armenian Genocide.
YEREVAN—President Serzh Sarkisian
Friday, in an interview with Euronews, said Turkey had no moral
right to blame Armenia for anything, nor does it have a right to
impose any conditions on Armenia. Sarkisian also voiced official
Yerevan’s concerns regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
resolution process.

Bulgarian Party Submits
Declaration For Parliament to Condemn Genocide
SOPHIA
(novinite.com)–Bulgaria’s conservative Order, Law, and Justice (RZS)
party on Thursday submitted to Parliament an official
declaration asking that Bulgaria condemns the Armenian Genocide
committed by Turkey.
The declaration is in connection
with the Thursday visit of Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmet
Davutoglu, to Bulgaria and statements of Turkey’s Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the country is prepared to deport
100,000 Armenians from Turkey.
RZS is also requesting an
official answer from Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, about the
policy of his cabinet
regarding the Armenian Genocide during World War I.
The party leader, Yane Yanev,
says they aim at reaching a consensus about Bulgaria’s
assessment of the tragic events and giving a clear statement in
defense of historical truth as the US and Sweden have done.
The US Congressional Foreign
Affairs Committee and the Swedish Parliament recently approved
resolutions recognizing the Genocide, stirring outrage in
Turkey.
YEREVAN
(RFE/RL)—Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian on Thursday
refrained from publicizing Armenia’s position on international
mediators’ recently modified plan to resolve the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He also denied that Azerbaijan has
largely accepted the proposed peace deal.
It seems Turkish Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not see the irony in his statement
Tuesday, when he threatened to deport Armenians from Turkey if
Congress passes the Armenian Genocide resolution.
LOS ANGELES–A coalition of human rights
activists will mobilize at the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles
(6300
Wilshire blvd. Los Angeles, 90048)

jailed in Turkey for 8 years on charges of terrorism.
The demonstration, set to begin at 2pm, is
being organized by the United Human Rights Council in
conjunction with the Armenian Youth Federation, ARF Shant
Student Association, American Kurdish Information Network,
Kurdish American Youth Organization and Kurdish Community of
Southern California.
Assistant Secretary of State
Philip Gordon told reporters that there is no deal with
Democratic congressional leaders to block the resolution. That
contradicts earlier claims by the State Department.
YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Underscoring its
status as Armenia’s leading European donor, Germany has
announced its intention to provide up to 100 million euros ($137
million) in fresh loans aimed at fostering the country’s
economic development.
“There are currently 170,000
Armenians living in our country. Only 70,000 of them are Turkish
citizens, but we are tolerating the remaining 100,000,” said
Erdogan during an interview with the BBC Turkish service in
London on Tuesday. “If necessary, I may have to tell these
100,000 to go back to their country because they are not my
citizens. I don’t have to keep them in my country.”

Ankara
Demands Guarantees From Washington Over Genocide Bill
ANKARA
(Combined Sources)—Turkey is demanding written guarantees from
Washington that the Armenian Genocide resolution, approved by a
key congressional committee in early march, will not be brought
to a full floor vote in the House of Representatives.
“Ankara should have written
guarantees that the resolution will not be put on the House
floor. Only in this case Ambassador Tan will return to
Washington,” Taraf daily quoted a government source speaking on
condition of anonymity.
Turkey recalled its Ambassador to
the US, Tamik Tan, minutes after the adoption of the Armenian
Genocide resolution by the House Committee on Foreign Relations.
Meanwhile, Ambassador to Sweden
Zergun Koruturk, who was recalled after the Swedish Riksdag
passed a resolution recognizing the genocide of Armenians,
Assyrians, Chaldeans and Pontiac Greeks, has already returned to
Stockholm.
BERLIN (Combined
Sources)—Turkey should stop imposing artificial preconditions to
delay the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey
and ratify agreements signed between Yerevan and Ankara last
October, said Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian on
Monday.
STOCHOLM
(Hurriyet)–Following an increase in tension due to a Swedish
parliamentary resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide, the
Scandinavian country’s prime minister urged Turkey on Tuesday to
prevent any deterioration in relations.
Clinton made the remark at a
meeting with international journalists and bloggers visiting the
U.S. State Department. Responding to a question from an RFE/RL
reporter, she dismissed claims that Washington is turning a
blind eye to human rights violations in Azerbaijan because of
its economic and geopolitical interests in the oil-rich country.
WASHINGTON
(Today’s Zaman)–US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has
expressed regret over a US House committee’s vote to approve a
resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide, warning of
probable “damaging” impacts of vote on Turkey-US relations.
LOS ANGELES—By inviting President
Serzh Sarkisian to Washington, the Obama Administration is
aiming, once again, to make Armenia an accomplice in the White
House’s efforts against the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide, said Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau member
Dr. Viken Hovsepian, who called on Sarkisian to postpone his
Washington visit to after April.
WASHINGTON (Combined
Sources)—Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday invited
President Serzh Sarkisian to visit Washington next month, in a
telephone conversation that appears to have centered on the
stalled rapprochement talks between Turkey and Armenia, reported
RFE/RL.
PARIS (RFE/RL)—President
Serzh Sarkisian has suggested that Turkey will not
unconditionally normalize relations with Armenia anytime soon
and again threatened to annul the universally welcomed
agreements signed by the two nations last October.
The Parliament of Sweden on
Thursday, recognized the Armenian Genocide after a long debate
with a vote of 131 to 130.
The resolution mandates Sweden to
officially describe the large-scale murders of Armenians and
other ethnic groups in Turkey in the early years of the last
century as genocide.
It’s only a small grave, a
rectangle of cheap concrete marking it out, blessed by a
flourish of wild yellow lilies. Inside are the powdered bones
and skulls and bits of femur of up to 300 children, Armenian
orphans of the great 1915 genocide who died of cholera and
starvation as the Turkish authorities tried to “Turkify” them in
a converted Catholic college high above Beirut. But for once, it
is the almost unknown story of the surviving 1,200 children –
between three and 15 years old – who lived in the crowded
dormitory of this ironically beautiful cut-stone school that
proves that the Turks did indeed commit genocide against the
Armenians in 1915.
The vote, last Thursday, by the
House Foreign Affairs Committee to approve H. Res. 252—the
Armenian Genocide Resolution—has increased Turkey’s usual banter
and has sent the Obama Administration into a tailspin, in the
end showing how truly uncommitted this White House and State
Department are to truth and justice and how committed they are
to unequivocally advancing their agenda.
PARIS (RFE/RL)–French President
Nicolas Sarkozy urged more intensive efforts to resolve the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and a quick implementation of the
Turkish-Armenian normalization agreements during talks with his
visiting Armenian counterpart, Serzh Sarkisian, on Wednesday.
WASHINGTON–Armenian National
Committee of America (ANCA) Chairman Ken Hachikian gave voice
Monday to the profound moral outrage of Armenian American voters
over the decision last week by President Obama, who had earlier
this year abandoned his own pledge to recognize the Armenian
Genocide, to launch a White House drive to block proper
Congressional commemoration of this crime against humanity.

This demonstration was a testament to the will of the Armenian

propaganda, whether it be here in Los Angeles, or across the
globe in Azerbaijan, said Jivalagian.
Our goal tonight was to have a two-front operation with the
impact of our questions being bolstered by loud protests against
Azerbaijans inhumanity from outside, explained Santikian. After
the protests started, there wasnt a single person inside who
didnt stop for a moment to think about the credibility of
Suleymanovs claims.
ANKARA (Reuters)—Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday warned that a
U.S. resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide Monday,
endorsed by the House Foreign Affairs committee on March 4, will
seriously damage U.S. Turkish relations.
“The decision of the
Foreign Affairs Committee will not hurt Turkey, but it will
greatly harm bilateral relations, interests and vision. Turkey
will not be the one who loses,” Erdogan said on Saturday,
speaking to a group of Turkish businessmen.

Resolution Passes Through Committee
WASHINGTON—On
Thursday, March 4, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a
hearing on the Armenian Genocide Resolution–H.R. 252. The
resolution passed by a vote of 23 to 22.
In
his introductory remarks, Howard L. Berman (D-Calif.), chairman
of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, underlined the
undisputed fact of the Armenian Genocide, noted that the
overwhelming majority of scholars affirm the fact of the
genocide, and urged his colleagues for vote for it. He added,
“It is now time for Turkey to acknowledge the reality of the
Armenian Genocide.”

"Following this development, our ambassador to Washington, Namik

Obama Administration Urges
Congress to Wait on Armenian Genocide Resolution
WASHINGTON
(AP)– The Obama administration is urging Congress to hold off on
voting to approve a resolution recognizing the Armenian
Genocide.
The House
of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee was scheduled to
vote on the resolution Thursday, and appeared likely to endorse
it.
During
remarks in the debate, White House spokesman Mike Hammer said
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had spoken with the
committee’s chairman, Democratic Rep. Howard Berman, Wednesday
evening and indicated that such a vote would jeopardize
reconciliation talks between Turkey and Armenia.
U.S.
National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer also said
President Barack Obama called Turkish President Abdullah Gul on
Wednesday to urge quick ratification of a protocol signed last
year to normalize Turkish-Armenian relations.
Turkey
Threatens to Recall Ambassador if Genocide Bill Passes
ANKARA
(Reuters)–Turkey threatened Thursday to recall its ambassador if
a U.S. congressional panel votes to recognize the Armenian
Genocide, a government official said on Thursday.
NATO-member Turkey has said its ties with the United States
would be damaged and Ankara’s efforts to normalize relations
with Armenia could be endangered if the resolution is passed by
U.S. lawmakers on Thursday.
“We are
open to all options,” said a government official when asked if
Turkey would be willing to recall its ambassador to the United
States should the bill be passed.
Ankara
recalled its ambassador in 2007 for consultations after a U.S.
panel approved a similar bill.
WASHINGTON
